Radon comes from uranium in soil and rock, and the Upstate's geology gives it more radon potential than most of South Carolina. The EPA rates Greenville County Zone 1, its highest category, and it is the only county in the state with that rating. Spartanburg, Anderson, Pickens and Oconee counties are Zone 2.
Zone ratings are county-wide predictions, though, and the state's own test data shows why every home should be tested. Initial tests reported to the SC radon program through June 2022 averaged 5.0 pCi/L in Oconee County, higher than Greenville County's 3.4, even though Oconee is Zone 2. Pickens averaged 3.0, Spartanburg 2.6 and Anderson 1.7. Every one of those counties had individual homes test far above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L.
Many Upstate homes sit on crawl spaces or slabs, and older homes may have basements. We install sub-slab systems and crawl space systems in all five counties, along with radon testing and system repair.

Building a new home in the Upstate?
Greenville County requires radon control methods in new homes, usually passive radon-ready piping. If a test after move-in shows elevated radon, that piping can often be activated with a fan. See new construction radon for details.
